Referring to Mr. Harcourt's Despatch flo. 109 of the 27th. April, I have the honour to state that the securities and coin deposited by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corpora- -tion against their note issue include as suggested in paragraph 6 of the Despatch, the coin deposited with His Majesty's Consul- -General at Shanghai. There is therefore a substantial surplus.

I enclose a copy of a letter from the Chief Manager of the Corporation regarding the Shanghai deposit.
